A concert in the park

So, I get an email from a friend/teammate about going downtown to the park to check out some music. Sounds pretty cool, and we have nothing else planned, so we agree. Besides, some other friends will be there and the main event is Livingston Taylor, brother of James Taylor. The plan was to bring some snacks and some frosty barley sodas (beer), and have a very chill evening. Just what we needed.

We loaded up and got downtown, called Chris, and made our way into the park. It's a bigger event than I expected, with tables and people milling about, so I wonder what's up. We found our friends and found a place to plop down. The mood was light and it was great chatting with them about end-of-season wind down and stuff. As we are naturally moving toward the adult beverage portion of the evening, and the subsequent music, some things began to become clear. We seem to be the only ones in redneck 4th of July mode. The first group to come on stage is a church choir. Huh?

Chris and I venture off to find some paper cups to mask our libations, and return to some jeers from the group. Yes, it seems we had brought cooler bags of beer to a recovery benefit concert. Oh boy! Chris looks at me and says, "Do you see any clouds?" Undeterred, we decide to enjoy a couple as the sun was going down. It was patently obvious that this wasn't "our crowd" as we were having way too much fun. I stated that we probably weren't fooling anyone, as the recoveries in the crowd could probably smell us 50 yards away.

Oh well, it was a fun evening (until Grace moved from energetic girl to pain-in-the-butt, forcing our departure) and Livingston Taylor was really great. Sounded just like his brother, not surprisingly. I think that's a chapter out of the book "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People." Oh well.

Other than that, I'm in Marathon training. Probably not taking it as seriously as I should, but this is a "complete" event, not a "compete" event.

I hope the folks doing Beach to Battleship and IMFL a great race and great weather this weekend! And to Robin: knock the MMTR out! To the rest of you: have fun, but don't get arrested!

Wow. I never considered the likeness of "complete" vs "compete." I need more events including the "L."

I woulda been right with you on the paper cup beer sodas...in fact, just reading about you enjoying a 4th of July atmosphere in FRIGGEN NOVEMBER is enough to make me pout. Jerk.

Ah, back to Wisconsin.
